Join the Battle
The Portsmouth Used Car Center is partnering with My Breast Cancer Support for the second year in a row, a local breast cancer support organization here in Portsmouth, NH. At the end of the month of October, your friends at the Portsmouth Used Car Center will be donating a portion of our proceeds to My Breast Cancer Support. The goal of My Breast Cancer Support is to provide financial and emotional support for those who have cancer in the Greater Seacoast area of New Hampshire and Southern Maine. They work to aid breast cancer patients on their individual paths to wellness.
My Breast Cancer Support was founded back in 2005 as BreastCancerStories.org via an online journal that was started by Wendy McCoole, the then-Executive Director. She used this site to keep her friends and family updated on her progress throughout her fight with breast cancer and various treatments. That eventually morphed into a forum that was an online community where caregivers and patients could write, read and share experiences with one another and loved ones.
When 2011 came around, the organization made the decision to refocus efforts toward supporting local breast cancer patients and their families. This new initiative was called My Breast Cancer Support, which is what the organization was renamed too in April of 2013. Throughout the course of their tenure, they have helped over 1,000 local breast cancer patients. Hope chests are available at each cancer center, which are filled with gas cards, movie passes, etc.
Many breast cancer patients struggle financially. Through patient assistance grants, they help pay for groceries, cleaning, repairs, heating fuel, utility bills, rent/mortgage, and more. They also provide mentors for the children of those who are suffering through their partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Through wellness programs and travel scholarships, My Breast Cancer Support provides patients with a ton of assistance.
